Since today is Sunday and I have been meaning to write about all the many funny things that Wes and James have been doing in church and regarding church things so I thought I would write a little montage of memories of Sunday hysterics.
We had the most wonderful Bishop in our last ward named Bishop Henniger. Weston absolutely adored him and spoke of him all the time ( he also lived across the street from us. Little Weston couldn't quite say Bishop Henniger so it came out "Spaceship Hamburger." When he was old enough to realize his mistake it didn't matter because "Spaceship Hamburger" was what he had called him for so long.
Let me preface this next antic by stating that our ward in AZ starts at 8:00 am and is about a 25 minute drive from our house. Every week we have to wake the kids up for church and dress them half asleep. We generally have grapes and waffles or dry cereal in our row at church. Our first week in the new ward Wes was particularly grumpy. When we walked in our new Bishop introduced himself to us and tried to say hello to Wes ( wes just ignored him and clug to my leg.) A few weeks later when we had become friendly with the Bishop he informed us that the first week in the ward when we first met him in the hallway when Tay's and my backs were turned Wes stuck his tongue out at the Bishop!!!! We all laughed but really I was so embarassed. Thank goodness for a Bishop with kids of his own an a sense of humor.
I have been really, really sick with this pregnancy. Most days you will find me laying down all day on the couch and praying I don't puke all over the kids. The kids play with one another really well so they are pretty self sufficent but I must admit they have been watching alot of TV as of late. Weston is always so sweet and asks me how I am feeling and this particular day came up to me and said " Mom you need a blessing to make your belly feel better?" I said yes thinking he would suggest we would call Tay. Instead he laid his little hands on my head and totally imitated Tay giving a blessing ( Wes is really fond of receiving blessings so he has had alot.) He put his hands on my head and took a deep breath and paused dramtically and asked Heavenly Father to make my belly better. It was so funny and cute, but also so touching. If I ever have a doubt about wrestling my little rascalls to church, having FHE even though they only care about the activity and treat portion, offering blessings nightly prayers is making a difference---- it is!!! They are picking something up! So although we clearly need to be teaching him about the priesthood authority, for now we will just appreciate that he has faith that blessings work.
Wes was assigned his first primary talk a few months ago and as any mom would do I sat down with him to write it with him ( really just write it for him) the day before. I thought we were pretty well prepared and Wes was psyched about being able to talk in the microphone in primary. So Sunday came and he is called up I go up there with him to whisper the words of the talk into his ear. Wes was not having it- I tried to whisper in his ear and he proclaimed " no Mom I can do it by myself!" So what was I to do ?? Well the talk consisted of lots of things Wes was thankful for -- really fast trains, cars, airplanes that fly high, high in the sky, and I think he mentioned something about Jesus and liking primary at the end of the talk. Although it didn't go as planned at least we now know Wes has no problem with public speaking.
The last story is a short one but also comes as a warning to all those who may want to let there kids bear there testimonies at sacrament meeting. Wes had been asking for about 4 months to bear his testimony and I kept telling myself if he asked the next month I would let him. Well the next month came and he sure idd ask so I went up to the podium with him so he could bear his testimony. He bore a beautiful, surprisingly relevant testimony. I was so proud until after he was done and annouced into the mic that " now it's mommy's turn." Although I should have been thrilled with his good example - I was not. I'm the kind of girl that likes to gather her thoughts a little before doing that. Everything I said made no sense and came out all jumbled as Wes stood next me with his head in his hands smiling out at the whole congregation. Lesson learned - use extreme caution when allowing a three year old control of a microphone.
